Rich In American History
The city has been steeped in rich history and culture ever since its founding in 1786 by George Washington’s younger brother, Charles. The Washington family owned a significant amount of land in Virginia, including portions that would become West Virginia. Charles inherited this portion of land from his older half-brother Lawrence and successfully petitioned the Virginia General Assembly to incorporate a city. He then moved there and began to build it, promptly donating four corners for public use that became the Jefferson County Courthouse, Charles Town City Hall, Charles Town Post Office, and Charles Washington Hall. Those sites still exist and serve the community to this day. Charles Town has since become the county seat of Jefferson County.
